Using Posts for a Pergola Awning Combination

by Jay
(Colorado)

I am putting a pergola type awning onto my existing
deck. The current deck is about 8' from grade with 6x6 post. I want to support the awning using 6x6 post in conjunction with the existing post. So in other words anchor awning post onto deck post.
Would the titan post anchor work for me in this situation?

Thoughts on Pergolas
by: Editor - Rich Bergman

First a quick comment on pergolas. Lots of folks use our 4x4 and 6x6 post anchors for pergolas including some gazebo manufacturers who have submitted unsolicited testimonials to us saying they love them.

That being said, I would caution you that any post that is that high - 7 feet, 8 feet - is going to have a lot of leverage. The leverage is far more than the post anchor is designed to hold all by itself.

But the reason it does work well is that pergolas and gazebos rely on - when designed and built properly - the roof structure to provide rigidity and resistance to swaying, torquing and twisting.

The anchors are designed specifically work well for posts that have unsupported ends in a range of 36"-42" high. But when built into a pergola and gazebo they do impart a useful degree of strength in addition to the structure itself.

So, the answer in a round about way it yes - with the above exceptions.

Now, specifically it's a bit hard to understand exactly what you have going on there when you say "in conjunction with the existing post" so I can't really comment directly on your intended application unless I saw drawings or pictures to further explain. But I hope this is a helpful start for you.
