Our new house is located in a major city. We have a roof deck with a gas hookup (I assume for a grill). My question is can we safely put an outdoor fireplace up there?

It would likely depend on the type of fireplace. Some are gas only, other use gas to light wood and it acts like a hybrid. That may be more problematic if embers flying around area an issue. Smoke in urban areas is also frowned upon.
