PVC stair tread support

I currently have deck stairs with wood treads; stringers are spaced 14 inches apart. I want to replace the wood treads with AZEK PVC deck boards. I have gotten various opinions about the need to add 2x6 wood supports between the stringers, under the PVC treads, since the current stringers are spaced more than 9 inches apart. What do you recommend? Thank you.
