Deck support bracing without posts

I would like to build a very small 4' deep x 5' wide deck off a back door for access from the back of a garage. Can I brace/support the outer deck back to the garage wall onto a second lower ledger rather than installing posts at the outer edge?

Attached sketch is not to scale.

Brace Fastening
by: Dana Coulombe

Thank you. Those are the areas I will be taking care with. I will look at the site tomorrow to verify but I think I can bolt through the wall for the top anchor and screw into the concrete at the bottom. I plan to bolt the braces to the deck and to the lower plate with screws and brackets/hangers.

A Truss Type Brace Will Work

Yes, you can brace a small deck in this manner. Of course how strong and safe it is all comes down to the integrity of your fasteners, concrete screws and anchors and the way you secure the brace into the underside of the deck framing.
