Stairway

I am trying to finish a job that a contractor started on some deck railing. The deck is roughly 8 ft above surrounding grade. The stairway has one handrail that matches the style of the handrail around the deck. My question is whether IBC requires that there be handrails on both sides? The stairway is roughly 46" wide (full tread width), if that makes any difference. I have attached a photo. Thanks for the help.

Follow these stair drawings

Here is a good visual summary of some of the key things you need to consider. It is the stair guidelines.

As far as having to have a hand rail or guard on the other side I just can't help you.

There are some restrictions about that I know but I can't recall the details. Best walk down to your local building department at city hall as I am sure they will have a copy of the code sections near by for you.

Code compliant solution for deck stairs
by: CA Decks

You can meet and exceed ICC-ES lateral load code requirements and reduce your liability with these innovative adjustable stair brackets.

EZ Stairs was the only company I know of that made them and they are the only code compliant solution for rail posts on any wood stair. However I think they no longer exist.
