Does a backyard deck always have to be attached to the house?

Floating Decks

Decks that are below a certain height can be separate floating structures and do not have to be connected to the ledger board of the house.

I am not certain of the height. I thought it was about 6 feet but perhaps a knowledgeable visitor might have the answer.
